Stronger Together: The True Spirit of International Women’s Day

Every year on March 8th, we observe International Women’s Day—not just to celebrate but to reflect, take action, and commit to a world where women support each other, break barriers, and create new opportunities together. On International Women’s Day (IWD), we celebrate the achievements, raise awareness about gender equality, and inspire inclusion.

March 8th is a reminder, not just a date. A reminder that although there has been progress, there is still a long way. In addition to being a day to honour women, it is also a day for women to stand for each other.

Why Does International Women’s Day Matter?

International Women's Day is not just about celebrating progress; it’s about recognizing the work that still needs to be done. Women around the world continue to face challenges such as gender-based violence, pay gaps, and underrepresentation in leadership roles. By highlighting these issues and advocating for change, we can build a future where everyone has an equal chance to succeed.

Are We only Talking About Equal Rights on International Women's Day?

Equality is, of course, at the heart of International Women’s Day. But it’s not just about women's rights anymore; it’s about everyday actions, support systems, and real empowerment. Women today are CEOs, entrepreneurs, activists, athletes, scientists, and leaders. Yet, many still struggle with biases, lack of opportunities, and unrealistic expectations.

We often talk about equal rights, breaking the glass ceiling, and participation. But beyond these big conversations, real change happens in the small, everyday moments—when women uplift other women.

So, beyond fighting for systemic change, how can we, as women, genuinely support each other in our daily lives?

Celebrate, Don’t Compete –Society has often made women feel like they have to compete with each other. Let’s change that. Instead of comparing or competing, let’s support and celebrate each other’s successes. A kind word, a recommendation for a job, or simply cheering on a friend can make a big difference.

Support Women-Owned Businesses – When you buy from women-led brands, you’re not just purchasing a product; you are supporting a dream, an effort, and a vision. Seek out women entrepreneurs and spread the word about their work.

Mentor and Share Knowledge – If you have learned something, pass it on. Whether it’s professional advice, financial wisdom, or life lessons, mentorship can be a game-changer.

Raise Your Voice Against Bias- It's simple to ignore gender bias or casual discrimination but keeping quiet just makes it worse. Challenge assumptions and encourage fairness in the workplace, in social circles, and even within families.

Prioritise Women’s Health and Well-Being – Health is often sidelined, especially for women balancing multiple roles. Encourage regular check-ups, talk about mental health, and normalise self-care as a necessity, not a luxury.

Beyond Just One Day

International Women’s Day shouldn’t be the only time we talk about these issues. The change happens in our everyday interactions, in boardrooms, homes, social media platforms, and communities. So, as we celebrate Women's Day 2025 in India, let’s ask ourselves: What can I do today to make a real difference for another woman? This Women’s Day, let’s move beyond slogans and hashtags and commit to real, tangible support for the women around us. Because when women stand for women, we all rise together.
